WIB Survey Terms & Definitions

IT or information technology - Any activities relating to computers, including hardware, software and communication with or between computers.

General Computer Usage - Basic operation of a personal computer or a workstation that is connected to a remote computer.

Standard Office Software - Programs for personal computers that allow the user to create and manipulate email, documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

Packaged Software - Programs which perform a specific function, such as accounting or engineering design. If you need training in a specific package, please provide the package name in the comments.

Computer Operations - Routine tasks to operate a server or larger computer, such as backups, attaching new devices and software upgrades.

Technical Support - Answering questions and resolving problems encountered by computer users in your organization.

Software Development - Determining the requirements for a new computer-based function, and creating, obtaining and/or modifying one or more programs that performs that function.

Information Security - The implementation of programs and practices that protect the integrity and safety of computer programs and information.

Internet Usage - Techniques for accessing information on the Internet safely and efficiently.

Database Support - A database is an organized collection of related information. Support tasks include defining new databases, maintaining security for databases and creating reports from the information in databases.

Multi-media/graphics - The use of sound, video and still images, often to create marketing materials.

Network Administration - Network Administration maintains connections between local computers and/or computers at other locations. Network Administration tasks include adding new users and computers to the network, and maintaining security across the network.

Network Support - Answering questions and resolving problems encountered by network users in your organization.

Server Support - Maintaining the programs and information stored on a server computer at your location.

IT Certifications - Many manufacturers of computer hardware and software designate coursework and/or testing to certify individuals as competent in a specific product or activity. For example, a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator will have tested abilities to design, implement and administer Microsoft SQL Server databases.

Onsite Classroom Training - Training which takes place at the employees’ work place.

Offsite Classroom Training - Training which takes place at a different location than the employees’ work place. The location may be a formal education facility.

Internet-based Training - Training which is done entirely on an Internet connection. Generally, this training may be done on any schedule, although some Internet-based training includes real time electronic conversations with the instructor.

Short Seminars - Training which can be accomplished in a single session that lasts no more than four hours.

Long In-Depth Classes - Training which requires more than four hours. This training may be multiple short sessions or contiguous training for one or more full days.
